Normandale Community College
Located at the intersection of 98th Street and France Avenue in Bloomington, Normandale Community College is the academic choice for most Northern Lights players.
Whereas many teams' travel schedule are not conducive to a full academic load, our team stresses academics, from ACT review classes to school enrollment and tutoring support. To be rostered on our team and be eligible for league games, our athletes are required to be enrolled in college or high school courses and maintain a successful GPA. We hope to attract serious student-athletes to our organization and prove to college scouts that the players that wear our team jersey are academically viable on the college level. |

TEAM TRADITIONS NL fans throw stuffed animals on the ice to celebrate the first NL goal of each home game and to raise money for our team's "charity of the year." You may pick up a stuffed animal at the ticket table when you make a donation. Seasons 2003 through 2005, the donations went to Children's Hospital (Markus Bachman has benefited from their services and we want to help them help other children!) and 2005-5 funds went for disaster relief. For 2006-8 the team's official charity is Feed My Starving Children. Our organization has volunteered at the Eagan warehouse packing food.
Players get their first Junior goal puck presented to them in the locker room after the game.
We paint a brick navy in the locker room for each regular season win, teal for playoffs, and silver for nationals. The "Northern Light of the Game" is honored in the team salute at the conclusion of the game and signs the brick in the locker room.
Princess Aurora is a young girl from the community who has demonstrated inner beauty through service and character. She is honored by dropping the ceremonial puck at home games.
February Snowball Fights ('04,'05) to raise money for community efforts (Food Drive, Disaster Relief) and to have a platform to talk about sportsmanship. Warmer winters with less snow has prevented this event the past few years.
"Blinded by the Light" played at the conclusion of home game wins with a team salute
Team meals are sponsored by local churches and families after almost every game
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS OVER THE YEARS
Helping Little Heroes (selling Mpls Star Tribune papers for Children's Hospital)
Make A Difference Day (annually each October)
Adopt a Highway (stretch of Old Shakopee Rd. near HWY 169 in Bloomington)
Feed My Starving Children (2006-8) assist with packaging food to go to help combat hunger worldwide through this MN based company
Northern Lights Glory: Our players visit area elementary schools to read to 4th and 5th graders from our book which we hand out to students to keep.
Saint Paul Winter Carnival: Team members help set up and participate in the Torch Light parade ('08)
Disaster Relief: Team members have responded to disasters under the auspices of the MWBC Disaster Relief Unit. They have helped with food provisions after the Winona flood (Summer '07) and various sandbagging and tornado cleanup trips over the years.

TEAM HISTORY July 2002: Reorganized from the South Suburban Steers Junior Hockey Team in South St. Paul
(Len Mankowski owner and Jim Martin GM)
Ross and Stephanie Smith were voted in as President and VP of the board. The Smiths then gained operational control over the team; simultaneously the former board resigned to allow the Smiths to bring in new members and staff.
The Smiths knew Josh Hauge and Eric Fink from when they were players on the Steers in the late '90s; the Hauge-Fink-Smith management team worked furiously over the summer dreaming, recruiting, creating paperwork and initiating strategic partnerships.
2002: A Summer of Changes
1) Team was moved to Bloomington Ice Garden to be closer to protected area schools and Normandale Community College.
2) New name, colors, logo
3) Staff, Board, managment design
4) Rewriting or creating paperwork
Ross Smith came up with the team name after many suggestions and brainstorming.
Jerseys designed in conjunction with Chris Bonvino of Gemini Athletic Wear; Dark navy jerseys in Mighty Ducks style with Northern Lights written on it was our away jersey. (Ross wanted the fans in other communities to know who we were). The white jerseys have the NL logo reminiscent of the old North Star logo.
First NL Goal: 9-18-03

The Watkins family agreed to become consistent volunteers with game operations. We began offering some merchandise items. Josh Storm and Ryan Adams joined the organization as scouts.

Fogerty Print: '99 MN State HS Tournament Program From the Terrence Fogerty website. Notes from the artist about his painting called "Tribute" :
"Tribute" was the cover for the 1999 State Hockey Tourney program. It offered a bit of comfort and nostalgia for those hard core St. Paulites who saw the Tournament move to Minneapolis' Target Center during the construction of the new Xcel Center. I spent a lot of hours at the State High School League office going over old tourney programs and looking for the right teams that have appeared most often at the tourney since it's inception. My "all-tournament team" is set in the old St. Paul Civic Center Arena with its clear dasher boards. The clear boards were one of the most memorable aspects of the old Civic Center. The other memory for me were those Fighting Saints versus Houston Aeros boxing match-ups in the old WHA. Fans of the old SOUTH SUBURBAN STEERS Junior hockey team (now the Northern Lights) might be interested to know that I used players from that club for models in this painting.
