Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MJHL)
Northern Lights aim for Snowball Fight Record for Relief Fund
January 27, 2005

The Twin Cities Northern Lgihts of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League invites the hockey community to come be part of history and a great cause.

The team will host the Guinness Record "World's Biggest Snowball Fight" to raise money for disaster relief. The team hopes to attract more than 2500 to participate in the snowball fight.

On Feb. 12 in Bloomington MN the snow will be marked like a hockey rink with fans of either side. A local government official will participate in the ceremonial puck drop at "center ice" and Northern Lights players dressed in full gear on both sides will drop their gloves to signal the beginning of the fight.

Fans are then invited to join the snowball fight, gathering supplies from the "ammunition areas" and hurling them at the other fans across the No-Mans zone in the middle. Approximately 10 minutes later, participants will declare a truce and as good sports shake hands before heading to the check-in table to be officially counted for the Guinness Record.

An hour before the fight, the team is organizing a (practice run) at the the world record for the most simultaneous snow angles, so the morning will be full of fun memories.

Only those who have pre-registered may participate and be counted for the reocrd, so interested hockey players and teams should register by completing the online registration form (www.northernlightshockey.com) and mailing it to the hockey office at 8109 Bryant Avenue South, Bloomington MN 55420 by Feb 5 or dropping it off at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Prizes will be given for percent participation from lcoal schools and classrooms. Prizes will also be given for the top three hockey teams for their fundraising effots.

Last year's attempt was at Buck Hill Ski Area and althoguh it did not draw enough participants over 8 years old to break the world record, the event was covered on CNN, ESPN top 10 of the week, all major networks in the US and the BBC in Europe. National media have committed to be in attendance again this year.

The Northern Lights nonprofit organization exists to help its amateur male players 16-20 years old to develop hockey skills and overall athleticism; prepare for advanced hockey, college, the workplace, and life; and make a positive difference in the community.

The Positive Coaching Alliance has recognized the Northern Lights as one of three youth sport organizations on the national level for the 2004 "Honoring the Game Award" for its development of its athletes on and off the ice and for using creative methods for encouraging sportsmanship.

This event is one of many events hosted by the team to provide leadership and service opportunities throughout the season. The team hopes that the youth in the community will rally around the chance to help make a difference with their personal contribution and fundraising for disaster relief efforts.
